The Amalgam War---Clash on the Fringe AAR

Here is a battle report of a game of Clash on the Fringe a weekend or two ago.  The setting is my own, the fluff background I intend for my own upcoming sci-fi game.  Earth is in the grips of an invasion by the Amalgam, a biological infestation that behaves like an invasive species in an ecosystem, before ultimately evolving into a full-fledged military force (think the Chtorr crossed with the Borg crossed with the Posleen). The models are a mix of Ground Zero Games, Ravenstar, converted Games Workshop, and Khurasan.  Pictures below.

The scenario was simple: cut-off troops from an Organization for Interstellar Progress (OIP) have to fight their way through a cordon of Amalgam combat organisms.  The OIP troops pushed forward in a skirmish line, engaging Amalgam targets as they appeared.  The OIP’s firepower and training did them well.  They inflicted heavy casualties on the Amalgam, but suffered a few reversals; one power-armored trooper was dragged down and torn to pieces by a group of Amalgam assault troops, and heavy fire killed several other OIP soldiers.  However, initiative problems for the Amalgam—we could just never get more than a two activations in a row!—and Failures to Activate, along with the OIP’s steady advance and tight control of fire, won the day for the humans.

Thanks to Russ for the terrain and running the human troops.

    1. Thanks! I had grown rather tired of drab painting (that's what WWII is for).

  2. Nice game. I am looking for a set of Sci Fi skirmish rules and think CotF is the direction I am being pulled in.

    1. Thanks! CotF is a fun game, easy to play with plenty of action. If you want something more hard-sci-fi, I'd suggested Nordic Weasel's other sci-fi game, No Stars in Sight. (Ivan has described them to me thusly: CotF is an adventure game, for playing a game that feels a bit like Star Wars; No Stars in Sight is a wargame, for playing a game that feels more like Black Hawk Down with lasers.)

    2. I like the sound of both of those options. I will have to check out No Stars in Sight.
